SKI SCHOOL: General Description - The ski school is comprised of an evening class and a day of ski instruction. Training is appropriate for beginner through intermediate levels. The school teaches, reviews, and gives you an opportunity to practice cross country skills. Membership is required for participation in the Ski School.
Often referred to as cross country skiing, Nordic skiing consists of propelling oneself over the snow on skis. The basis of moving along is a kick and glide sequence, assisted by poling. Grip of the ski on the snow is achieved by use of a pattern designed into the ski directly under foot or application of a wax on skis not equipped with such a pattern. Once basic technique is acquired, one is able to traverse just about any terrain. Subsequent practice sets aside such concerns as stopping, negotiating turns, and traversing hills. Efficiency of skiing advances with “time on the snow”, and that combined with improvement in physical strength and endurance that follow, allows greater distances and more challenging terrain to be readily accomplished. Nordic skiing has expanded beyond classic touring to include skate skiing, backcountry excursions, telemark as a sport, and advanced free style that typically entails steep terrain. Gear has been introduced to support these options. Nevertheless the form of Nordic skiing that a majority of participants enjoy is touring. The great feature of cross country is the ability to go just about anywhere there is snow and open country available to the public. The call and enticement is the opening of pristine winter land vistas not to mention the benefit of exercise acquired and the sense of accomplishment in getting there!
